General Biotech Lab

The process centre for budding biotechnologists at the degree and postgraduate degree levels.

The General Biotechnology Laboratory serves as the central facility for undergraduate and postgraduate biotechnology students, providing foundational training in routine biological instruments and macromolecular analysis techniques.

Major equipment

  • UV-VIS and visible-range spectrophotometers
  • Binocular and monocular research microscopes
  • Digital water bath
  • Vortex mixer
  • Magnetic stirrer with hot plate
  • Digital pH meter
  • Clinical centrifuge
  • Colorimeter
  • Microtome
  • Digital electronic balance

Core curriculum experiments

Training covers microscopy and histological methods, pH and buffer analysis, spectrophotometric validation, qualitative and quantitative biochemical analysis, chromatography techniques, enzyme assays, cell biology (mitosis/meiosis studies), immunodiffusion, apoptosis demonstration, chromosome preparation, blood group pedigree analysis, and molecular model preparation.

Beyond-syllabus work

Students also conduct leukocyte separation via dextran methodology, PCR amplification of scoC genes with agarose gel analysis, membrane protein isolation/purification, and antimicrobial peptide gene expression analysis.
