Molecular Biology Lab

Qualitative and quantitative assays across the DNA, RNA and protein pathway.

The Molecular Biology Laboratory at TSBS focuses on understanding the fundamental DNA → RNA → Protein pathway through qualitative and quantitative assays.

Equipment & instruments

  • Thermocycler (PCR device)
  • UV-Visible spectrophotometer
  • Digital precision balance and pH meter
  • Horizontal and vertical slab gels with electrophoresis power packs
  • UV trans-illuminator
  • High-speed and refrigerated centrifuges
  • Variable-volume auto pipettes
  • ELISA reader
  • Orbital shaker, homogenizer and gel rocker

Core curriculum experiments

Standard experiments include SDS-PAGE, genomic DNA extraction, agarose gel electrophoresis, blotting techniques (Southern, Northern, Western), RNA/mRNA isolation, ELISA, plasmid work, bacterial transformation, and PCR/RFLP/RAPD analysis.

Beyond-syllabus work

Students may pursue amylase analysis via SDS-PAGE and Western transfer, enzyme kinetics using ELISA readers, organellar DNA isolation from plants, and native-PAGE conformational protein studies.
