Biotechnology is at the crossroads of an increasing emphasis on interdisciplinary teaching and learning. A practical-based curriculum provides specialised skills in the domain for students, and necessary technological know-how at the laboratory enhances the likelihood of sustainable work in industries, research laboratories and academia. School of Biotech Science, TACT provides a holistic understanding of practical concepts in Biotechnology & Microbiology through a ‘learning by practicing’ philosophy. Beyond the routine practicals of the curriculum, students also learn the downstream applications of each experiment and its implementability in basic research, process and product development. Students are trained in animal cell culture, microbial isolate culture from environmental samples, transcript expression analysis, and sequence/structure analysis using bioinformatics tools — the thrust being ‘industry-advantage’ laboratory skills through instruments, software and wet-lab experiments.
The laboratories of Trident School of Biotech Sciences are an example of this principle. Laboratories are provided for experiments in General Biotechnology/Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Bioinstrumentation, Microbiology, Plant Tissue Culture, Bioinformatics and Chemistry. In a centrally air-conditioned setup, these laboratories provide the high-standard equipment necessary for teaching the university courses.
